DROIDMAKER book now downloadable, FREE!

APRIL 18, 2012
And today, finally... DROIDMAKER is available in the iBookstore, for iPad. I have to say -- it's amazing in this format. It's the medium for which this book was created. The images alone are worth the $10 price tag. Get it in iTunes today! Thanks.

MARCH 9, 2012 POST SCRIPT
Here at SXSW, I'm officially announcing the release of the Kindle DROIDMAKER for only $9.99! It's color, it's searchable, and it's fan-tastic!
Droidmaker on Kindle.

JANUARY 17, 2012 POST SCRIPT
If you've just arrived here, i suppose you've heard you could get a free PDF of DROIDMAKER here. That was true until yesterday. I posted the book here a few years ago and have given away many. But tonight I wanted to announce that I'm creating an affordable ePub for the book, and will release Kindle and iBook versions very shortly. I've been busy recently helping my brother out by publishing his new fantastic book "How To Write Groundhog Day" (which will be available on Kindle on, obviously, Groundhog Day -- Feb 2, 2012).  Like Droidmaker on Facebook and i'll let you know the moment the digital Droidmaker is available. Thanks.

---------------------------
I'm not really sure how this will go over, but i've decided to make my book DROIDMAKER downloadable in its entirety, effective today. It's a long book (518 pages), and I still recommend going to Amazon and getting yourself a copy (it's how you can pay for this "shareware"), but below are links to get PDFs of the book: I've divided it into the three "acts" that makes up the saga.

Act 1: Intro plus Chapters 1-6 [removed 4/18/12]
Act 2: Chapters 7-17 [removed 3/16/11]
Act 3: Chapters 18-26, Index [removed 11/11/09]

(UPDATE 3/16/11: The time has come to take all the freebies down except for Act 1. Act 1 is both great and nicely representative of the book. If you like it, please head to Amazon for a copy!)

I don't know how long I can keep these links available, so get it while you can. I hope you'll enjoy it - Droidmaker is really the only work of its kind - and I hope you'll feel free to share it with like-minded Star Wars/George Lucas fans, computer graphics folks, videogamers, movie geeks, and technophiles. The reviews on Amazon have been quite wonderful (both Alvy Ray Smith AND Ben Burtt rave there) but your feedback is always welcomed.

Thank you, and enjoy!

JULY 2 POST SCRIPT --
Amazing! In just a couple days the book has been downloaded thousands of times, and i've decided i'll leave this accessible at least through the holiday weekend. Other than a short note from the publisher asking what the hell I was doing, the only emails i get are from you readers submitting typos and errata you've found. THANK YOU. Months of professional proof-reading and fact-checking, and years of book readers, and in a single day you've found more little errors than all of them. I have now made corrections to PDF 1, but will let you know if i adjust the other sections...

JULY 22 POST SCRIPT --
Over 15,000 downloads. Wow. I mentioned that "donate" button on the left, yes? Leave me your email address along with any donations so I can thank you personally. BTW: to answer some of your questions here - no, i don't plan on attending Comic Con nor Siggraph, but i am often available to give presentations to groups. Leave me a note about that as well.

Ay. I just downloaded the chapters and looked inside … can’t stop reading it. I think I take the day off and read the complete book. I gonna try to get my hands on a real copy—or I read the book on screen and buy the book later to read it a second time.

Thanks a lot.

Thanks for sharing your book, it's very nice to you. Even though my birth language is not English and sometimes I don't understand all of the text, I found it interesting. I think learning a lot about Georges Lucas. Thanks again.

Michael, I cherish my hardcover version - but thanks for the PDFs. DROIDMAKER reminds me of the intellectual rush I had reading early issues of Cinefex when they were first published. Your passion and precision is incredible. It'll live on for ages.

OK.. What the hell...THree clicks and I ended up reading the whole book non stop... It really is awesome and humbling to peek behind the curtains and see the origins of everything I do on a daily basis. Thx!

Love the book. I have a hard copy, but these PDF's might come in handy when I want to search for something.
Thanks a lot. Although I don't really understand why you're doing this.

Rubin said...

@Marijn,
Why am I doing this? Well, aside from it being an impulsive moment last week, it came down to this: I spent more than two years (YEARS) researching and writing this, full time. And since then it has sold maybe 10,000 copies. And I just felt like there were many people out there who just never heard of it, or were afraid of its heft... and at the end of the day, it was more important to me that folks read it than to profit. I think it's an important story.

I'd still rather folks buy a book (or leave a donation), but for the most part, I'm just deeply satisfied that people are hearing about it, reading it, and enjoying it.

Absolutely fantastic - as a hardcore lifelong Lucas nut i'm finding out things I never knew about!! Will be purchasing a copy ASAP.

Many thanks!!

It's gestures like these that build true loyalty to an author. Not only will I be buying a copy of this for myself, but all of my fellow nerdy friends will be receiving a copy this year as well. Well done, Michael.

Also, although I don't have a Kindle, I hear putting good tech reading in that format is a good idea. Get to it!

If interested in the idea, you can respond to him there. Either way, I guess!

I love that you're sharing this in an electronic format - but what about convincing your publisher (or Amazon) to make it available for purchase on the Kindle?

I'd cheerfully buy the Kindle version if it was available!

Thanks Michael. I just purchased the book and was looking for a link to recommend it to others, and I found the download, amazing!
Obviously it was a labor of love, and you are leading me to so many other interesting things, like the making of the graphics sequences (examples on youtube!).
Many thanks!

Something ironic is that both Coppola and Lucas wanted to modernize filmmaking to make it much better; and yet they made their best films before the modernization actually took place... their newer films are awful in comparison.
Just compare the movies Coppola made:
- 1970s: Godfather 1 & 2; Apocalypse Now.
- 1990s: Dracula, Godfather 3, Jack.
