True Brachiation

Hello friends. A few minutes ago, i sent the following bittersweet email to Netflix:

Dear Flixers,

Well, it’s that time. Time to say good-bye and move into the next uncertain part of my life. My years at Netflix have been so wonderful. Not just because of the company, or the work itself, but after many years on my own, it was fantastic to spend days with so many deeply intelligent and passionate compatriots. I have absolutely no doubt Netflix will succeed, and I am proud to have contributed in my own way, and hope to remain a friendly face on the periphery, cheering you on, and always available to help in any way I can.

I learned a great deal during my tenure, and have sincerely loved every day of this job; As I said just moments ago to some of the other PMs, I’ve never enjoyed a job or team more. I will miss you all.

This decision is partly, though not entirely, a function of my health, which many of you have been following with some concern. I am healing nicely, expecting a full recovery, but have most certainly shifted into a state of reflection on how best to spend my time. It is the rare “perfect storm” between changes in business and personal objectives and I think this is good moment to step away. ...

Without any regret, and only excitement for your future and mine, I leave. I know I’ll see you again soon. And to quote that poet Martin Mull: “Let’s not say au revior. Let’s just say hors d’oeuvre.”

This must have been a really tough email to write. It's clear that Netflix is a special company to work for. I have no doubt that your contribution will be missed. I hope that this next stage of your life will be just as rewarding.

Michael, I know that wasn't an easy email to write based on trying to write my own back in August.

I wish you all the best for your health and your new adventures whatever they may be.
